Our Marae
Kohutūroa Marae and Kawiu Marae are tūrangawaewae for Muaūpoko whānau – places where our whakapapa, our tūpuna and our connections to whenua are lived and remembered.
They are places of belonging, where generations of whānau come together to uphold tikanga, share kōrero, mourn, celebrate, learn and strengthen the bonds that connect us to one another. Through our marae, the stories, relationships and identity of Muaūpoko continue to be carried forward for generations to come.
Kohutūroa Marae
Kohutūroa Marae stands near the shores of Punahau (Lake Horowhenua), on whenua that has long been home to Muaūpoko whānau. It is a place where uri return to connect with whakapapa, whenua and one another.

The name Kohutūroa
The name Kohutūroa is associated with the mist that settles over Punahau and the surrounding whenua. Kohutūroa Marae whānau hold the kōrero about the name’s origins and meaning.
Pāriri, the whare tūpuna
The whare tūpuna at Kohutūroa is Pāriri, named for an important tūpuna of Muaūpoko. Pāriri holds deep significance for Ngāti Pāriri and the whānau of Kohutūroa, connecting generations to their tūpuna and to this place.

Today, Kohutūroa Marae remains a place for hui, tangihanga, wānanga and celebrations. It is a place to share kōrero, strengthen relationships and keep connections between generations alive.

Kawiu Marae
Kawiu Marae stands on the northern side of Taitoko (Levin). It is a place where Muaūpoko uri return to connect with whakapapa, whenua and one another.

The name Kawiu
The name Kawiu is associated with a traditional clearing and cultivation area near Punahau, with historical references also linking the name to the customary drying of tuna. Kawiu Marae whānau hold the kōrero about the name’s origins and meaning.
Te Huia o Raukura, the whare tūpuna
The whare tūpuna at Kawiu is Te Huia o Raukura, a name of deep significance to the whānau of Kawiu Marae. Te Huia o Raukura connects generations to their tūpuna, whakapapa and to this place, with the kōrero associated with the whare held by Kawiu Marae whānau.
