Muaūpoko Hapū

Muaūpoko is made up of seven recognised hapū, each with its own whakapapa, histories, whānau connections and role within the wider iwi. Together, our hapū are central to the identity, strength and future of Muaūpoko. The seven hapū represented within Muaūpoko are Ngāi Te Ao, Ngārue, Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Pariri, Ngāti Tamarangi, Ngāti Whanokirangi and Punahau. These hapū are connected through whakapapa and through their enduring relationships with our whenua, waterways, marae and communities.

The Role of Our Hapū

Our hapū are an essential part of Muaūpoko life. They help preserve and strengthen whakapapa, tikanga, mātauranga and relationships between whānau. Hapū also provide important leadership, support our marae and create opportunities for whānau to participate in iwi kaupapa. Through strong hapū connections, whānau can maintain their sense of identity and belonging while contributing to the collective aspirations of Muaūpoko. Hapū have long played an important role in the history of Muaūpoko. Historical records also identify a number of hapū names associated with Muaūpoko over time, reflecting the depth and complexity of our whakapapa and whānau relationships.
