About Muaūpoko Tribal Authority
Muaūpoko Tribal Authority was established in 1997 as an Incorporated Society to represent and serve the people of Muaūpoko. Our purpose is to strengthen the social, cultural, environmental and economic wellbeing of our iwi while protecting the identity, rights and assets of Muaūpoko. Today, MTA provides leadership, delivers programmes and services, advocates for our iwi, and works alongside partners to create opportunities for our whānau and future generations.
Representation
Muaūpoko Tribal Authority is recognised as the representative iwi organisation for Muaūpoko and fulfils several statutory responsibilities on behalf of the iwi.
This includes representation under legislation such as the Resource Management Act and Māori fisheries arrangements, while advocating for Muaūpoko across a range of environmental, cultural and Crown relationships.
Our Mahi
Muaūpoko Tribal Authority works on behalf of the iwi by:
- Providing leadership and strategic direction.
- Representing Muaūpoko in local, regional and national forums.
- Delivering health, social, environmental and community programmes.
- Supporting whānau, hapū and marae development.
- Maintaining the Muaūpoko iwi register.
- Protecting iwi rights, interests and assets.
- Managing projects that benefit our people
Governance
MTA is governed by a Board of Trustees comprising representatives from each of the seven Muaūpoko hapū.
Together, the Board provides strategic leadership and governance while ensuring the voices of our hapū are represented in decisions affecting the iwi.

Muaūpoko Trading Company
Muaūpoko Trading Company Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Muaūpoko Tribal Authority. The company is responsible for managing the iwi’s commercial interests, including fisheries assets, with the aim of protecting and growing these assets for the long-term benefit of current and future generations.
