Nei au ka \u012bnoi ki te Atua matua i te rangi kia m\u0101turuturu te t\u014dmairangi o t\u014dna atawhai ki runga i a t\u0101tou katoa i t\u0113nei w\u0101, \u0101, haere nei te w\u0101.<\/p>\n<p>Last night I shared practical considerations for tangihanga during Alert Level 4, I also mentioned that I would be providing more detailed advice on tangihanga in my next p\u0101nui.<\/p>\n<p>My team has worked across the sector and with trusted iwi experts to develop an official set of guidelines for wh\u0101nau to follow when they experience a bereavement during Alert Level 4. Please see them below. I\u2019ve also attached them as a word document for easy distribution.<\/p>\n<p>OFFICIAL GUIDELINES FOR TANGIHANGA<\/p>\n<p>When someone dies \u2013 what we need to do first and foremost<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0\u00a0 Immediately contact your local Police and inform them of the death. You may wish to speak with the Police Iwi Liaison Officer, which your local Police should be able to facilitate easily.<br \/>\n*\u00a0\u00a0 Appoint a wh\u0101nau member to liaise with Police and Health Providers. This may be the person who contacted local Police in the first instance.<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 M\u0101ori communities, iwi, hap\u016b and wh\u0101nau are being encouraged to establish local \u2018kaiwhakarite\u2019 or people who can assist wh\u0101nau during this time as well. You may wish to contact your \u2018kaiwhakarite\u2019 to seek advice. Get in touch with your iwi and hap\u016b organisations as well as marae to see if a \u2018kaiwhakarite\u2019 has already been established.<br \/>\n*\u00a0\u00a0 Contact the deceased\u2019s Health Provider (GP, Hauora, PHO).<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If your loved one has died from a known health issue, this will be critical information for the Police \u2013 your loved one\u2019s Health Provider must liaise directly with the Police to pass on this information.<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If your loved one has died from COVID-19 then it will be critical for the Police and\/or Health Provider to support you with information on what to do next.<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If your loved one has died from an unknown cause, a post-mortem will need to be undertaken. The Police will facilitate this process and will liaise directly with your appointed wh\u0101nau member.<br \/>\n*\u00a0\u00a0 Get in touch with a local funeral director to organise arrangements for burial or cremation.<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you are unsure about funeral directors, work with your local Police Iwi Liaison Officer, \u2018kaiwhakarite\u2019, Tribal Authority, Health Provider and\/or local Civil Defence Emergency Management Centre to identify someone suitable.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0\u00a0 Once you have secured the services of a funeral director, be prepared:<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They will uplift your loved one wearing full protective clothing including masks, gloves etc. \u2013 this may be daunting for wh\u0101nau, especially young ones.<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They will only allow one appointed wh\u0101nau member to facilitate arrangements including paperwork \u2013 this may need to be done remotely or at least using strict social distancing measures.<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Wh\u0101nau are not allowed to go to the funeral home for viewing, karakia, poroporoak\u012b or mihi.<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 All funeral directors are being encouraged to carry out burials and cremations as quickly as possible and at the nearest cemetery or burial ground as defined by law.<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Depending on where you are located there may be the ability to have the deceased interred at an urup\u0101 or private cemetery. However, this will need to be agreed with the funeral director.<br \/>\no\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 However, this does not preclude wh\u0101nau from electing to have their loved one placed in storage (refrigerated), if this facility is available locally, until we are past the current Level 4 Alert \u2013 National Emergency. You can discuss this option with the funeral director if you wish to.<\/p>\n<p>TO NOTE:<\/p>\n<p>T\u016bp\u0101paku are potentially contagious<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Where possible, try to minimise contact with the deceased loved-one.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It will be very hard, but we cannot allow any others to come into contact with the deceased or those who are in isolation with them.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This means that wh\u0101nau and friends are unable to visit your home or funeral home to pay their respects.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It also means that the time available with your deceased loved-one will be short.<\/p>\n<p>Cremation<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Although you may not be used to cremation it may have to be an option you consider, especially if you are wanting to return your loved one to their wh\u0101nau urup\u0101 once we recover.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Be prepared to potentially not have your loved-one\u2019s ashes returned until after the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Honouring your loved one<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Once wh\u0101nau know the time of the burial you may want to hold a service at that same time in your own home with those wh\u0101nau you are isolating with.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You may also choose to livestream this service with other wh\u0101nau and friends.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Once we recover from this pandemic, your wh\u0101nau may want to come together to honour your loved one. If your wh\u0101nau member was cremated, you may want to bury their ashes at a wh\u0101nau urup\u0101. If they were buried immediately, you may choose to hold a service at the burial grounds. These are only some of the ways you may choose to remember your lost loved one.<\/p>\n<p>Getting support<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We encourage wh\u0101nau to utilise the services of their Police Iwi Liaison Officers, their local \u2018kaiwhakarite\u2019 and their deceased loved one&#8217;s Health Providers.<br \/>\n\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Grieving is never easy. If you feel you are not coping, it is important to talk with a health professional.
